SOMALI WILD ASS (Equus africanus somaliensis) ©San Diego Zoo

The Somali Wild Ass is a subspecies of the African wild ass. It was found in the Southern Red Sea region of Eritrea, the Afar Region of Ethiopia, and Somalia. The legs of the Somali wild ass are horizontally striped with black, resembling those of a zebra.

Around the world about 150 individuals live in zoos. One of the leading zoos for breeding this rare donkey is the Zoo Basel, Switzerland. Since 1970, 35 Somali wild asses were born in Basel and, as of September 2009, the zoo has a stallion and three adult females with their offspring. Donkeys found in Italy are typically descended from the Somali Wild Ass, as opposed to those from other European countries which are usually descended from Nubian Wild Ass.
