Municipal Art Gallery of Corfu

Palace of St. Michael and St. George
The Municipal Gallery of Corfu showcases a remarkable collection of works dating back to the 16 th to the 20 th century, the majority of which are representative of Modern Greek painting. The Gallery was founded in 1978 and was initially housed in the building of the Dalietos estate. In 1995 it was relocated to the east wing of the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, a building designed by the architect George Whitmore. The Gallery was enriched by donations of paintings by Georgios Samartzis, Nikolaos Ventouras, Aglaia Papa, and Filippos Makotsis. The majority of the works found in the Gallery were created by Corfiot artists of the 19 th century, such as Spyridon Prosalendis and his son Pavlos, Georgios Miniatis, Charalambos Pachis, Lykourgos Kogevinas, Vikentios Bokatsiampis, and Angelos Giallinas, a painter best known for his watercolour paintings. The collection of paintings also includes portable icons, such as those of Michael Damaskinos (16 th century) and Emmanuel Lambardos (17 th century). The Gallery also features collections of engravings, sculptures, art photography and contemporary art which are exhibited in temporary exhibitions. The Gallery also houses historical relics of the Municipality of Corfu. Educational seminars and other activities related to the arts are held in the building.
