Nestled within the isolated and wild landscape of the Asterousia Mountains, Treis Ekklisies is a secluded seaside village located 64km south of Heraklion. With its stunning views of the Libyan Sea, Treis Ekklisies offers visitors some of the most incredible beaches in Greece. To get to the village, travelers must take a 10km, snake-like asphalt road beginning in the village of Paranymfi, where the former monastery of Saint Paul can be found, housing ancient frescoes from the 14th century. Halfway through the drive, the imposing 145m-high Ambas Gorge waterfall can be admired, offering gorgeous views of Treis Ekklisies.
The village is home to the largest colony of vultures in Greece and Southern Europe, including the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), one of the rarest species of vulture in Europe. The settlement takes its name from the three local Byzantine churches, dedicated to the Transfiguration, St. George and Annunciation. In front of the hamlet is a long sandy beach with crystal clear deep waters, although there is not much in terms of organized facilities. For those looking for more secluded spots, a dirt road takes visitors along the seaside to the rock of Kolovrehtis with a small cove, the beach Volakas, and Glikia Vlyhada, a favorite amongst locals and campers.
