Limassol for tourists. From urban infrastructure to nature

Limassol is a true cosmopolitan city among all cities in Cyprus.

It is developed as well as the island's capital. Limassol is not inferior to Paphos in terms of tourist attractiveness and convenience for spending holidays at the same time.

Limassol is full of life in both winter and summer. This is a unique phenomenon for Cyprus, since life freezes in the off-season almost everywhere. But not in Limassol!

Limassol for life and recreation

Limassol is rightfully considered the most developed city in Cyprus. This is not surprising: a city infrastructure makes Limassol comfortable for rest, work and permanent residence.

Here is everything a city dweller needs:

  • good roads and road network
  • water and electricity without interruption, in winter you can find a hotel with heating
  • public transport runs throughout the city and beyond
  • a large number of events for adults and children: fr om cultural to extreme
  • a lot of areas where you can find real estate for recreation and residence
  • close distance to shops, stores and supermarkets in all areas
  • variety of rental centers, excursions and local guides
  • comfortable sea coast for recreation full of well-equipped municipal beaches.

Limassol has a lot of events to go. Any place. Any time. There are always events in the city. A foreign tourist in Limassol feels that they are in a large and comfortable European city.

It is also worth noting that it is easy for foreign guests to communicate in Limassol, as many nationalities live here! According to statistical data, there are about 20,000 Russian-speaking people permanently residing in the city!

Homes to buy or rent in Limassol

The city has a lot of accommodation for renting for a long or short period. That is an important thing for a tourist city. It often happens that a tourist does not want to book a hotel room for various reasons: high cost (especially in high season), inconvenient location, plans to stay in Cyprus for longer than 7-14 days. Then landlords come to the rescue, offering real estate for rent for a day, for a week or a month.

Limassol real estate is the most various. You can find everything: a room in a guest house and luxurious seafront apartments. In addition, you can always negotiate a discount or additional services with your landlord.

There is another option that foreign guests often put into practice: buy real estate, live in it for several months a year, and rent it out the rest of the time. It is beneficial, expedient and can even help to get a residence permit and citizenship of Cyprus later.

All year round

Only two cities of Cyprus do not depend on the season: the capital city of Nicosia and Limassol. Moreover, the first is considered a business city, and tourism there is much less developed. Limassol, on the contrary, is able to delight tourists at any time of the year.

Spring, summer and fall are a hot season for those who love the sea, beaches and hot sand. Also at this time it is great to travel to the villages and engage in local culinary. In winter, Limassol becomes calmer, but does not calm down completely, like Larnaca or Ayia Napa.

Interesting events happen in the city in winter, attractions are always open, and tourists are happy to go out to nature. By the way, the easiest way to get to the ski resort of Troodos is fr om Limassol, wh ere there is snow, skiing and other winter activities.

Nature and climate of Limassol

Part of the Limassol district is located on the coast, the rest is in the mountains. The relief and (thus) the climate is very different between these parts.

Limassol city is located along the coastline as well as tourist villages wh ere everything is designed for a beach holiday. The summer air temperature can reach more than +40 degrees, the sea temperature is about +29 degrees. In winter, some locals and tourists swim, as the temperature of water rarely goes under +18 degrees.

It's pretty different in the mountains. The air goes to +27 degrees in the middle of the summer day, at summer night comes freshness and coolness. In winter, the temperature can drop below zero, and snow falls in the highlands. Therefore, we cannot say that there is no real winter in Cyprus.

The nature of the Limassol region is impressive. The beauty of the foothills and mountains does not leave anyone indifferent. Even a simple hike in the coniferous forest gives a strong impression, but if you visit the highest points of the Troodos mountain range...

Limassol landmarks

Limassol is in no way inferior to other cities in terms of attractions: there are also ruins of ancient temples, medieval fortresses, Orthodox shrines and natural monuments. Well, there are even more museums and galleries than in other Cypriot cities.

What can you find in Limassol city? This:

  • The sculpture park on the Molos embankment
  • A medieval fortress with a museum inside. By the way, not only adults like it, but also kids adore this museum, as "there are knights!"
  • Cami Kebir Mosque. The minarets of an old mosque rise right in the city center
  • Marina, the largest port on the entire island! Cruise and small ships under the flags of various countries stop here
  • Orthodox shrines: the Church of St. Ignatius, the Cathedral of Ayia Napa, and the Church of the Holy Trinity
  • St. Catherine's Catholic Church
  • 28 October Street is a long tourist line named after the Ohi Day celebrated annually in Cyprus.

This is a short list of wh ere to go on foot, especially if you are staying in the city center. And if you rent a car, you can significantly expand your geography.

So, a must visit on the outskirts of Limassol:

  • Akrotiri Salt Lake, the smaller brother of the famous Larnaca Salt Lake
  • The medieval castle of Kolossi, overgrown with many legends over several centuries
  • Ancient Kourion (with an impressive amphitheater) and a museum attached to it
  • Ruins of the ancient city of Amathus
  • Ruins of the temple of Apollo Hylates
  • Erimi Wine Museum. Do not forget to try the legendary Cypriot Commandaria!
  • "Cat" monastery of St. Nicholas. There are sooooo many cats here!
  • Rock of Aphrodite, or Petra tou Romiou. Wild beach, wh ere, according to legend, Aphrodite first set foot
  • Monastery of the Holy Cross in Omodos, here is kept a piece of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified
  • Trooditissa Monastery
  • The Chantara waterfall is one of the largest in Cyprus.

This is just a small list of what can be seen in Limassol. Of course, there are much more interesting things. You need to live here for six months or a year to get around all the iconic sights and get lesser-known tourist spots.

Limassol with kids

Many people think that Limassol is the best place to stay with children. Indeed, it is easy to find entertainment for children of any age in a big city, and if parents want beach holidays, there are more than enough safe ones in Limassol.

There is a zoo in the city center, next to the Municipal Park. It is small, but you can spend all your day here: the small kids can ride a pony, and the older children love the park and playground.

No one (including adults) refuses to visit the water park called Fasouri Watermania. The smallest kids splash in the paddling pool, and schoolchildren and adults adore water slides.

You can always drop by the Limassol Municipal Park or visit the Molos embankment playground. And if you are tired of the city, it's easy to go out to nature. It is recommended to visit, first of all, open meadows near fresh water reservoirs: Germasogeia, Kouris, Polemidia.

Donkey farms are popular in the villages of Limassol. Not only donkeys are bred there, but other animals as well. In fact, this is a light version of contact zoo. The largest farms are "Apesia Hills" and "Dipotamos" in the villages of the same name.

Cultural holidays and festivals

Limassol is the culture center of Cyprus, and nobody even argues with that. Lovers of contemporary art should look into the art galleries, the largest of which is the Municipal Art Gallery.

There are also enough museums: special attention should be paid to the one located in the Limassol Fortress and the Municipal Museum of Folk Art. Lovers of authenticity are advised to go to large villages and visit the museums of everyday life there, as the flavor is better felt here.

Also in Limassol, various festivals are constantly held. The villages are full of mini-festivals of flowers, fruits and berries in summer. Larger events are held in the city.

Carnivals and festivals in Limassol:

  • Apokria Carnival in honor of the spring coming
  • Wine Festival takes place in late August or early September annually
  • Beer festival in early July.

All festivals are held for more than one day, they are accompanied by folk ensembles and popular artists performances, contests and events for children and adults. The atmosphere is extremely relaxed and openly cheerful.

Long stay as a tourist

Finally, Limassol is ideal for those who want more than a week holiday. This city hospitably welcomes everyone who wants to taste the flavor of Cyprus as long as possible.

Often people stop in Limassol for a month, or even two. At the same time, experienced tourists try to live both in the city and in its environs. In 30-45 days you will know Cyprus better... and who knows, maybe the island will suddenly become your home?
