Sparto a shrub of peculiar appearance with yellow flowers!

The Sparta or Sparta (spartium junceum) is angiosperm, dicotyledonous plant belongs to the family Fabaceae, which is characterized by pentameric scaly flowers in the shape of a butterfly. It is the only species of the genus and is a shrub. The origin is from the Mediterranean region. It responds naturally throughout Greece. The plants are scattered in lowland and semi-mountainous areas and are one of the most common shrub species in Greece.

Description of Sparta

Sparto is a shrub of peculiar appearance, with many, cylindrical, green shoots and reaches a height of 3 meters. Its shoots are almost bare, without leaves, because it has few thin leaflets. The flowers are bright yellow, fragrant and grow in inflorescences. It blooms from mid-April until August. The fruit is leathery flat, hairy 6-8 cm long and 7 mm wide.

Development conditions

It grows satisfactorily in all soils. Prefers sandy or clay soils with good drainage. It prefers sunny and bright places.

Watering 

It needs a little to moderate watering. During the hot summer months and the first time until it is installed in a garden it needs frequent watering.

Lubrication

Fertilizer is applied twice a year. Once in early spring and once in late autumn. 

Durability 

It has great resistance to cold at temperatures down to -12 ° C. Resistant to air pollution. Drought resistant, barren and dry soils. Resistant to strong winds.

Pruning

Early spring, after the last cold, pruning is needed. It needs the topping of the mature flowers and the dry and weak shoots in all seasons, for maximum and better quality flowering.

Ideal choice for planting on slopes, side roads, public parks. Suitable for coastal areas.

Enemies and Diseases

Sparta is considered one of the most hardy plants and has no problem with insects or other diseases. Root rot can be observed due to excessive watering and consequently reduced growth.
