The nearly 100-metre tall towers were demolished and it generated an estimated 80,000 tonnes of debris, sending huge clouds of dust into the surrounding areas. The towers are the tallest structures to be demolished in India and the demolition was watched with bated breath as over 3,700kg of explosives were used to bring down the structure and it only took 15-20 minutes for the entire building to collapse into a heap.

The buildings were demolished in pursuance of a Supreme Court order that had declared the structure as being in violation of the norms. As the structures came down, Twitter was flooded with funny memes and jokes on the event.

Memes go viral on social media
The main reason why the demolition of the twin towers had garnered so much interest was because it was the first time such a huge building was razed to the ground in India. It turned into quite a spectacle as views turned to news channels as they documented every second of the demolition process. It took just a matter of seconds for the entire building to come crashing down like a 'house of cards', using the 'waterfall implosion' technique.

Many took the event as the opportunity to share memes and jokes, while many targeted the conviction with which media houses covered the demolition.
