The fish mask is a discontinued item that appeared as a prize from the Squeal of Fortune. When released it was an uncommon reward, but it later was moved to the rare slot. The item was removed from the Squeal of Fortune on 28 September 2012. It was the first tradeable cosmetic item from the Squeal of Fortune.

The fish mask does not require any stats to wield and is purely decorative. When wearing this mask and fishing, fish will occasionally give the player compliments. Players receive no fishing benefits from this mask. Right-clicking the mask when worn and selecting "blow bubbles" allows the player to blow bubbles from the mask for 2 seconds.

Compliments[edit | edit source]

When the player fishes with the mask equipped, the mask will compliment the player. The compliments appear as chat above the fishing spot; other players are able to see this chat as well. Some compliments seem to be gender-specific, and the type of fishing does not affect the compliments seen.

Update history[edit | edit source]

This information has been compiled as part of the update history project. Some updates may not be included – see here for how to help out!
  • patch 3 July 2012 (Update):
    • Players can no longer rest whilst blowing bubbles from their Fish mask.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Compliments coming from wearing the mask is a joke about the phase "fishing for compliments" being taken literally.
  • The mouth is open on the character model, but the mouth of the mask's chathead model moves, in a similar fashion to the camel mask.
  • The bubble blowing emote is one of the few emotes that can be used while the character is walking or running, the others being the use of a Bubble maker, the yawn emote, Confetti and when ringing a Slayer Bell. However, the emote can also be used while performing other tasks such as teleporting, offering at a player-owned house altar, fishing, cooking, etc.
  • Players could also blow bubbles while resting; however, the bubbles remained in the same spot as if the player were standing. This feature is no longer available, but a similar way you could do this is when you teleport and blow the bubbles making the bubbles come out as if you were standing.
  • While fishing, player can blow bubbles without interrupting fish catching. However, bubbles won't follow the head up and down, they float still above like in the resting glitch.
  • There was a glitch at one point that allowed any free player to claim the mask despite the message appearing. It has since been patched in a hidden update.
  • The phrase, "You're gonna need a bigger inventory, _____. " , one of the compliments, is a reference to the movie Jaws.
  • While wearing this mask while fishing in the rock pools during The Beach, Reyna was the one giving the player compliments instead of the fish.
  • The fish mask was the first new discontinued rare item since RuneScape Classic.
