Jerry profiles the polarising durian fruit tree.

SERIES 32 | Episode 15

Durians may be the most controversial fruit - revered by many as the King Of The Fruits, and reviled by others for their strong smell, apparently reminiscent of open drains. However, the taste has been compared to rich custard flavoured with almonds.

Jerry says, "follow your taste buds, not your nose!"

Durians in Australia

There is a plantation near Darwin. Can be grown in southern Queensland given a sheltered position.

Also, the smell will attract a range of rainforest animals to eat the fruit - so look out if you have Orangutans living nearby…!!

Gardening Australia suggests you consult your local authorities or go to Weeds in Australia to check the weed potential of any plants for your particular area.
