Classic Scottish Sea Stacks

Am Buachaille in NW Scotland

Classic Scottish Sea Stacks Overview

The three classic Scottish sea stacks consist of the Old Man of Hoy, the Old Man of Stoer, and Am Buachaille. Each one is a unique and very worthy objective in its own right, however, climbing all three in one trip makes for an unforgettable experience in some of Scotland’s most beautiful coastal landscapes. Although the climbs on these sea stacks are not particularly difficult, they are not for the faint-hearted either. A reasonable amount of previous climbing experience seconding multi-pitch climbs up to around VS/HVS is required with one pitch of E1 5b on the Old Man of Hoy. For Am Buachaille it should also be noted that a short swim is necessary to get to and from the stack. It is also possible to make a short swim across to the on The Old Man of Stoer, although a tyrolean (roped) crossing can be set up to avoid this.

We recommend this trip during the summer months, anytime from May through to September, and would suggest a minimum of 6 days. The weather and conditions in Scotland at any time of year are notoriously unpredictable and it should be noted that successfully climbing all three sea stacks is not guaranteed, however, we will do our best to make it happen and will suggest alternatives if the weather and/or conditions are not suitable.
