Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3—With colorful pages of people in all shapes and sizes, this book both serves as a joyous read-aloud for small and large groups and as a book for individual study and discovery. It works as an introduction to diversity without being explicitly about that, which is a gloriously refreshing take on the universality of the human experience. Young readers can look at the full-page color cartoon drawings for true-to-life representation of people in everyday group situations, such as a public swimming pool, the park, dance class, movie theater, and public transit. Displayed is a richly detailed tapestry of people with many skin tones, hair colors, shapes and sizes, clothing choices, and abilities; examples include wheelchairs, a hijab swimsuit, prosthetics on adults and kids, diabetics with insulin pumps, etc. More importantly, in a book about body positivity, the drawings represent people as they are in real life, "tall, short, wide, or narrow." The approach to both body image and body concepts is to use people-centric language and imagery that doesn't divide along explicit lines. Each spread with its dense drawing of people joined together in a group activity focuses on traits (body shape, skin tone, hair, eyes, faces, etc.) in a repetitive, rhythmic sequence. Feder includes representations of Africans, Asians, Muslims, and whites from small sizes to plus sizes in all positions. This book is an excellent pairing with Todd Parr's It's Okay To Be Different. VERDICT With lilting dancelike rhythm through word repetition and brightly colored detailed images, this is a timely and worthy addition for every collection.—Vi Ha, Los Angeles P.L.

Review

2022 ALA RISE: A Feminist Book Project List Pick

★ "A bustling celebration of body positivity that lovingly features bodies, skin, and hair of all kinds . . . Feder chooses clear and unapologetic language to describe body characteristics, challenging the negative connotations that are often attached to those bodies . . . Depicting societally marginalized human bodies in all their joyful, normal glory, this book is cool." —
Kirkus, starred review

★ "With such a joyfully inclusive range of humans, all taking part in community and taking pleasure in each other’s company, it’s hard to imagine a stronger statement of body affirmation and pride." —
Publishers Weekly, starred review

★ "[T]his unabashed promotion of body positivity packs a punch and reminds readers to respect and love every body—including their own. This is a timely message with universal applications." — Booklist, starred review

"Feder's rhyming text and double-page spreads filled with all kinds of people celebrate the variety of our physical attributes. The joy-filled cartoon illustrations pack a lot of bodies into the settings (e.g., subway car, pool, backyard barbecue) and offer plenty to consider." —
Horn Book

"This inclusive book shows and celebrates all types of bodies in the park, in the pool, at a party—everywhere. That’s exactly where all our bodies are . . . . It’s truly transformative not only to be seen by others but to see yourself. To see yourself just as you are. To see yourself included. To see your body as good, as cool . . . a great resource to start conversations about fatphobia and anti-fat bias and to help a kid struggling with their self-image." —Lisa Fipps, author of

Amazing book! Should be in every kindergarten classroom

Amazing book! Should be in every kindergarten classroom
I rarely write reviews, but I couldn’t help myself- I have been looking for a book for my kids to celebrate and normalize all different kinds of bodies and this is it! It’s really simple but beautiful images and clear words and sentiment- super easy to read, and celebrates every kind of body you can imagine- I wish they were a few more radically abled bodies but it’s pretty thorough! I just bought seven more copies and plan to give it to all the kindergarten teachers in my child’s school. I also have a 12 year old, struggling with his body size and plan to read it in his midst, so he can hear it in passing.♥️ this book reflects the world i want to live in and want for my kids to inherit 💫 but this book - and share widely!

My niece is a very curious and empathetic kid. She always has a lot of questions about strangers’ bodies when we go out together. I’m not a parent and am never quite sure how to help her learn without pointing, staring, or being rude (I try my best but I’m never sure the exact best way to do it). I bought this book for her so we could examine and talk all we want about all kinds of different bodies in private. She loved it. It was so helpful for me to be able to explain all kinds of bodies to her without being put on the spot to do it directly in front of the human in real life. And I think she felt relieved to be able to ask all of her questions, express fear and concern, etc without having to worry about hurting someone’s feelings.

The diversity and representation in this book are fantastic. The drawings are super cute. I love all the hidden features we found while reading, like how on one page, all the dogs match their owner’s hair color/style.

Thank you for making such a fun, educational, and heartfelt book. I can’t understate how amazing and important this type of representation is.

Bought this for my PreK class. One child noticed it on the shelf and asked me to read it for circle time. This lead to a GREAT discussion about bodies, health, differences, abilities…and lots of stories about scars! The language is simple. There are so many details in the pictures, my class noticed things I hadn’t.
Two points of consideration: there is a page where a mother is breastfeeding and another where two babies are pictured without clothes (very small parts of the illustrations). If “nudity” is an issue for you/your school, be aware. Second, the word “fat” is used once. If that word isn’t used in your home/school, be aware. I was asked by my director to cover up the babies (I drew shorts on them with marker) and to skip the word “fat” while reading.
This awesome book still gets 5 stars for diversity, representation, message, and coolness factor.

Great book that helps display a wide variety of body types and features. It helps normalize different body types for kids. My almost 5yo son has started noticing differences in bodies and body types and has been asking questions and making comments about people’s bodies lately. This book helped us start a conversation about different types of bodies and helped him see that everyone looks different and differences are okay. All bodies are good bodies. I look forward to reading it with my daughter when she is older and can better understand its meaning and importance.

I am a therapist and read this to kids when teaching body safety. The kids love this book. It shows many examples of human bodies, and lots of skin. It makes them comfortable in their own skin, I think. The naked babies playing at the sprinkler are always their favorites though.

Every young and old person need to read this book. If you can't read... just look at the pictures. It is simply beautiful. To see such diversity in one book and teach a child (and adult) that this diversity is so normal, I am grateful for this book. Bodies are cool.... seriously!

Really love this book that I got for my toddlers - love the idea of loving all bodies and getting used to seeing all different body types. Really different to more common/traditional books as the pictures do give pretty good representation of all bodies that we would see out and about. Really like that we can talk about the different body types (even with scars, differently abled, etc.) from the book to make it more normal and less of something to stare at when we see them out and about.
