"Max's Adventures are like good, family movies . . . "

Bill Myers - Author

Max Elliot Anderson grew up as a struggling, reluctant reader. After surveying the market, he sensed the need for action-adventures and mysteries for readers 8 and up, especially boys.

Mr. Anderson was a producer of the nationally televised PBS special, Gospel at the Symphony that was nominated for an Emmy, and won a Grammy for the double album soundtrack. He won a best cinematographer award for the film, Pilgrim's Progress, which was the first feature film in which Liam Neeson had a staring role. He has produced, directed, or shot over 500 national television commercials for True Value Hardware Stores. Mr. Anderson owns The Market Place, a client-based video production company for medical and industrial clients. His productions have taken him all over the world including India, New Guinea, Europe, Canada, and across the United States.

Using his extensive experience in the production of motion pictures, videos, and television commercials, Mr. Anderson brings the same visual excitement and heart-pounding action to his stories. Each book has completely different characters, setting, and plot.

Several books are published, with an additional twenty-eight manuscripts completed. Young readers have reported that reading one of Mr. Anderson's books is like being in an exciting or scary movie.

We live in a world where everyday we hear about shootings, terrorist attacks and other emotionally charged events. When was the last time you laughed so hard your face hurt? It has been awhile for me and with all the tragedies going on around us, I find myself not laughing or being cheerful at all. The trials of the world can easily distract us and keep us in a depression.

I enjoyed the various studies the author did on laughter. I found it interesting when he talked about his friend who was a dentist. He uses humor in his practice to make the person feel more at ease and to help the appointment go smoothly. What if we adopted that concept in our everyday lives? Some of us have life threatening illnesses and with a bit of humor it could help with the stress we are under. Some people use humor when they are nervous, or in a stressful situation. No matter when you use humor, it always makes others feel better . There are some funny moments in the book as he tells stories that relate to everyday life. I think it is important to be able to laugh at ourselves when we do silly things. The book is a great tool for bringing joy back into our lives . Thank you writing a book that shows us through humor , our situations can be bearable and " laughter really is the best medicine. "

"Humor has been said to be the most underrated elixir for good health. " Humor relieves tension and reduces anger and aggression. "

While this book contains hundreds of jokes and funny stories, it is also a book about understanding humor and what it means to have a sense of humor. Anderson relates the benefits of humor, such as aiding in the healing process. It can help with stress and depression too.

Anderson says reading this book and putting into practice the principles it contains will help your communication skills, help you develop a positive attitude, and be a better friend and work associate. Life will be more enjoyable in your circle of influence.

He takes about the first third of the book to discuss humor. He writes about doctors and dentists using humor, its role in the family, what's appropriate humor, the styles of humor, the use of humor in education, at the workplace, as a tool of management, in relationships, and in ministry. He has a chapter about humor in translation and how sometimes a joke will not work in another language or culture. He includes a section on how humor can hurt others (such as sarcasm).

I learned some interesting concepts about humor. It involves the whole brain, integrating and balancing activity in both hemispheres. Even though pastors love to use jokes, “Interestingly, there are no jokes in the Bible.”

The last two thirds of the book contains jokes. Lots of jokes. Some made me groan while others had me laughing until the tears ran. Anyone who wants a good source of jokes will find plenty of material in this book.

While I was tempted to skip right to the collection of jokes, I'm glad I read the material about humor. It's a good idea to know how and why humor works as it does before rolling out the jokes. It will help me make good use of the jokes found in the rest of the book.

Food for thought: “Laughter is one of the most powerful tools we have for coping with the serious issues in our lives.”

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through The Book Club Network for the purpose of an independent and honest review.

If you've never thought or read about humor and laughter being good for the body and soul, then this book is for you. In the first part of the book, the author tells of his research into the subject. Each beginning chapter deals with humor in different places and situations, i.e., medical, workplace, etc. In most of the chapters, I felt the author diverting from the subject at hand and just going on about humor. I found this part of the book tedious to get through. I did appreciate the section where the author instructs the reader on how to tell a joke and the importance of telling it correctly. While the material was interesting, I have heard a lot of it before. The second part of the book is jokes. Some of them I had heard before and many of them brought a smile to my face. I realized, through the author's instruction, that I can slightly modify some of the jokes to make them more personal, which in turn will make the recipient of the joke "get it" even more.
