‘The architecture of this hotel is really my vibe: they’ve taken the energy of the landscape and built it in to the bricks and mortar. The terrain of Utah makes you feel like a fish out of water as a Brit – as if you’re on the moon. You’re so used to damp and green, and then suddenly you’re hiking in canyons. ‘I lived here for three months when I did a play, The Leisure Society, at Trafalgar Studios; if I felt I was getting cabin fever, they’d move me into another room. Now I always stay when I’m in town – I know every single person who works here! ‘It’s owned by painters Brice and Helen Marden, so the decor here can be pretty stimulating. I love coming in apple-picking season, when the countryside is vibrant with vivid oranges and yellows. My husband and I hike in the Catskills and swim in waterholes. ‘This is on an old cattle route, and every room is filled with character. South American culture fascinates me: the people I met all had such huge hearts. We ventured out to see active volcanoes and hot springs, then stargazed at night – the sky is super clear.
