Hand-dug well found in Somerset during dig

Dane Cramer said he found the remnants of a hand-dug well on his Union Street property Monday. “The excavator said he’s pretty sure that’s (the well’s) pump and there was a windmill here,” he said. The well is an estimated 31-feet deep and 4 1/2-feet wide. The home is located in the Somerset Historical District where numerous homes date to the mid- to late-1800s or earlier. The well was found during digging necessary for an expansion to the home.
