Buffy the Vampire Slayer dominated the nineties and noughties for many, trouncing other TV shows with its worldbuilding, strong female characters, and complex plot lines and relationships.

But in recent years accusations came from starring actors that showrunner Joss Whedon had allegedly created an uncomfortable, hostile environment on the set of Buffy.

Now, Sarah Michelle Gellar – who played the titular role in the show – has spoken out further about her take on what it was like working on Buffy behind the scenes.

At The Wrap’s Power of Women Summit in LA, Gellar spoke during a roundtable, alluding to what is likely the Buffy set.

"For so long, I was on a set that I think was known for being an extremely toxic male set, and so that was ingrained in my head that that was what all sets were like, and that women were pitted against each other – that if women became friends, then we became too powerful, so you had to keep that down," she said.

"And now that I've had this opportunity to work with so many more women and men that support women as well, I realised how easy an experience it can be, but unfortunately we're still in that place where all of those departments a lot of times need to be women for us to have a voice."

Whedon has previously denied all allegations made against him regarding a toxic work environment.

Gellar's claims come just months after the news that the Buffy reboot – which has been in development since 2018 – has stalled to a halt indefinitely.

While it seems that certain stars of the original are on board with the creation of a new series, with no official network news as of yet it seems that we might be waiting a while to see if the production gets up and running.
