Monemvasia divided over castle town’s illumination

The illumination of the castle town of Monemvasia, southern Greece has divided locals, with some saying the project will highlight the landscape and monuments, while others insist it will alter the area’s character and increase its touristification.

The project concerns the central gateway of Kato Polis, the paths to Ano Polis, the Ano Polis town complex, the rock in the interior, the boundaries of Kato Polis, Agia Sofia Church, part of the fortification on the rock’s northern side and the acropolis.

The Association of Friends of Monemvasia has asked Laconia’s MPs and Deputy Environment Minister Giorgos Amyras to intervene.

The project is backed by the local municipality, the Peloponnese Region, the Culture Ministry and the Parnonas Development Agency, with a contract signed in January. It has been tendered with a budget of around €1 million. The project study must first be approved by the Central Archaeological Council.
