For Pamela Anderson, the decision to go makeup-free was more than an aesthetic choice. In a new interview with Elle, the actor, model, and memoirist explained that ditching her signature ’90s glam in favor of a fresh-faced look was, in part, a tribute to the late, great Alexis Vogel: her longtime makeup artist. Vogel died of breast cancer in 2019.

“She was the best,” Anderson said of Vogel. “And since then, I just felt, without Alexis, it’s just better for me not to wear makeup.”

Going makeup-free has felt “freeing, and fun, and a little rebellious, too,” for 56-year-old Anderson, who has spent most of her career playing the role of perpetual bombshell. When she was younger, Anderson admitted, her decisions were often made by simply “going along with what people were telling me to do.”

“I did notice that there were all these people doing big makeup looks, and it’s just like me to go against the grain and do the opposite of what everyone’s doing,” she said.

“I think we all start looking a little funny when we get older,” she added. “And I’m kind of laughing at myself when I look at the mirror. I go, ‘Wow, this is really...what’s happening to me?’ It’s a journey.”

Pamela Anderson is perhaps best known for her role on Baywatch. But in recent years she's gradually rebranded herself as misunderstood ’90s icon. Having released a documentaryPamela, A Love Story, and a memoir, Love, Pamela, earlier this year, Anderson is already working on her next project: a novel she described as “very romantic and sexy and traumatic and funny.”

“If I’m not writing, I know I’m not in a good place,” she told Elle. “If I’m writing, I am in my body. I am where I’m supposed to be.”
