Oracles of Fire #3

Last of the Nephilim

Rate this book
The Nephilim, a race of giants from ancient times, find a way to invade Second Eden, a peaceful civilization in an alternate dimension. A small girl on that world holds one key to a secret that will separate earth and Hades from their disastrous union, and another girl from a land underneath Hades holds the other key. Together, and with the help of two teenagers, they will battle the Nephilim and another great evil that plagues the land. With giants battling dragons, and a rogue dragon taking the side of the forces of evil, a cataclysmic battle erupts, endangering every life in both worlds. With the two sides in bitter conflict, another of the Nephilim, the most powerful of all, rises from the dead to join the battle. But whose side will he be on? The two Oracles of Fire, Sapphira and Acacia, have to find a way to protect the two key-wielding girls from the brutal giants who are determined to kill them at all costs. When all hope seems lost, another warrior steps into the battle, the heir of Arthur and hero of the Dragons in our Midst series, Billy Bannister.

2022 Series Review:
When I first read the Dragons in Our Midst series not long after this book released, it quickly hit my favorites list. The Oracles of Fire series took me a little longer to win me over, but eventually, it joined its predecessor on my top ten (technically sharing a space, as you really can't have one without the other). But time went on, and my growing reading list meant I reread less, and before long, years had passed without my touching these books (except to occasionally take Bookstagram photos). And the question arose: were they as good as I remembered? Other favorites from that time had fallen in favor as I found other stories that I loved more and that rang more true and as I discovered other authors with lovelier writing. Would Dragons in Our Midst and Oracles of Fire hold up?

In October 2021, I decided to find out. And as I delved into the familiar pages, I quickly found myself falling in love again with the story, characters, and themes, all of which were as excellent as I remembered — or, in some cases, better. Maturity on my part meant I could better appreciate certain characters and choices that had frustrated the younger me and that I could more clearly see the spiritual truths Davis weaves into every page of his writing. And books I originally didn't love — mostly Tears of a Dragon, Enoch's Ghost, and The Bones of Makaidos — I found I liked much better this time around because, again, I could better appreciate the themes, particularly the theme of sacrifice that runs so strongly through this series.

It's bit interesting for me to think that in some ways, these books were published at the last possible moment that they could've been really successful, both in- and out-of-story. In-story, the increasing omnipresence of the internet and surveillance and just the increased number of people with cameras on their phones would've made it nearly impossible for the dragons and anthrozils to stay hidden (especially in the case of LITERAL dragons or Bonnie and her wings) — and that's not even starting on the events at the end of Circles of Seven or the merging of Earth and Hell in Oracles of Fire. Those were a Big Deal in the story; they'd be receiving hundreds of times more attention and panic today.

And out-of-story, well, you can't get far into these books without recognizing that Davis isn't exactly subtle with his spiritual themes. Even compared to other books of the time, these books are saturated with Biblical truth, scripture, allegory, and messages — I would argue even more so than some books that were explicitly allegorical. It's even more evident compared to a lot of Christian fiction today, which tends to be much more subtle. But honestly? It's kind of refreshing to read a book that's so in-your-face about these things.

So, do these books hold up? Absolutely. If you've never read them before, pick them up. And if you have read them before, well, don't you think it might be time for a reread?

~~~
2022 Reread Thoughts: I forgot so much of what happened in this book — or, rather, I didn't forget it, but I assigned it somehow to other books. It is very good, though, and I like it much better now than I did the first time I read it. (And, I mean, I still gave it five stars the first time, so . . . yeah. Very good.)
(Second or third read.)
War is coming, and the heroes of the past seven books are gathering in Second Eden to fight it. Dragons, giants, prophets, oracles, warriors, healers, old and young...
WHAT I LIKED:
-Elam. <3
-Sapphira facing the darkness yet again
-All the action scenes with the airplane
-Dikaios, because he ranks right up there with horses like Bree from C.S. Lewis’s “The Horse and His Boy”
-Second Eden is a more detailed place than I remembered
-Angel’s choice—I get shivers every time at that scene
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
-The reveal of one character’s grandfather didn’t seem *quite* as important as everyone was making it out to be, but that could just be my take.
Overall, another epic instalment setting the stage for one of my favorite books of all time, “The Bones of Makaidos”!
The Last of the Nephilim is the third book of the Oracles of Fire series. The book picks up with Ashley and her group on the trail of clues trying to find her father. The trail takes them to a place called Second Eden in another dimension. They accidentally end up here when they fall of a bridge and crossing dimensions. This world has been peaceful the people are very innocent and listen to their conscience called companions.They hadn't experienced evil like killing because it had been awhile since the great war a long time ago. A second war is threatening to begin so some of the main characters like Billy end up in second Eden. But Evil tricks an inhabitant to basically invite an evil dragon to the world which isn't good for the inhabitants. The inhabitant named angel is taken by the dragon. The leader of the inhabitants named Abraham attempts a rescue but must sacrifice himself along with angel in order to give his people the chance to prepare for a war.
At first I didn't think The Last of the Nephilim would be a good book but it just had a slower start to action than normal. But I understand and I am glad it had its slow start to action. Bryan Davis did a great job of explaining the situation in Second Eden. He described their way of life and how they socialized. I wasn't very happy with how things turned out in the end but it made for a great story line.
The reader should read this if they are looking for a good Friday night book. It is a good read but you should have a basic knowledge of the books before this. Those who are already Bryan Davis fans I don't need to say much but to stick with this book. I definitely recommend this book to the general public especially adventure/fantasy fans. The reader will quickly find themselves very interested wanting to read the next page so that they know what happened.
I really hate to be so negative since so many people love this series but I just found this book incredibly dull and a slog to get through. Found the characters boring and plot boring at times. I honestly thought it was me and my lack of drive to read but it wasnt until I picked up other christian fantasy I realized how much I didn't like this book. I bought the last three books of the series, read the first and enjoyed it fine, read this and found it dull and will definitely not be reading the last book of the series.
A really intersting read. I must admit that some of the twists were unexpected but other I could guess. Having said that, the fight against the dragon Golioth deffinately worth the read. So I can't wait how this sequel series to Dragons In Our Myst will end.
Last of the Nephilim is exciting and thrilling. They're back, Billy and Bonnie are back in the story! The threat of the Nephilim on Earth has passed, and thanks to Karen and Naamah they didn't complete their bridge to Heaven. But the connection between Earth and Hades is still attached which is causing some of the dead in Hades to roam the Earth once again. As well as the nasty Caitiff from the Circles of Seven. Walter, Ashley, and Sapphira learn from Enoch that the only way to severe the attachment between Earth and Hades is that they must go to another dimension called Second Eden, and that the Father of lies himself is about to unleash a war on the peaceful people of that realm. Enoch instructs them to go, but they must send word to all the former Dragons, and the heirs, and friends to King Arthur, they must also come. Billy and his Father, Sir Barlow, Sir Patrick, and Shiloh journey to Montana to meet Sapphira, and she will open the portal to get them to Second Eden. Elam, Acacia, and Paili arrive in Second from Heaven's Alter, where he is prophesied to become the warrior chief. Sapphira is given a very important but trying task, she is asked to stay behind and keep Bonnie hidden from the slayer, and the only place that will protect them is Sapphira's old home in Hades, where they must wait in the lowest realm before they can go to Second Eden. Last of the Nephilim is amazing. The Mercy and Grace displayed in this story is one that will be remembered. A must read, the story continues and ends in book 4 The Bones of Makaidos. and what we thought was the end of this amazing story world was only the beginning to a new series called Children of the Bard, read book 1 Song of the Ovulum.
Bryan Davis' Last of the Nephilim is an enthralling book that draws the reader in like a black hole, and makes them crave for more like man before Thanksgiving dinner.
The theme of this book is to always remember what is most important to you. The author writes from the perspective of several different characters. This allows the reader to know whats going on and not be out of the loop. The writer has different characters set with their different personalities, giving the each a strong level of realism. With the maximum amount of greatness in these characters, my liking of the book is much greater than if these characters would have been normal. The settings in this book are well described and easy to identify when referenced to again at other times in the book. Bryan paints the main places into your mind, allowing even some one with a small imagination to visualize the areas. The main characters travel through a portal to a different dimension where they defend the naive and pure inhabitant from incoming evils, summoned by the only fallen member of their society, from their world.
I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys action with the story centered around God related actions.
My least favorite of Bryan Davis's books. The main reason: Too Many Characters! I enjoy ensemble casts, but there was just too much going on for me to follow. We start getting abreast of developments in Second Eden, and suddenly we're yanked out of that plotline to go back to Earth and check in with a group of characters there... And oh yeah, Mardon's mother is around for some reason?? Also, several developments feel random or "out of left field." 2 1/2 stars.
I'm on page 187 and I really really love this book. You just have to make sure your paying attention because there are many different views and it go's to different groups of people and what they're doing at that time.Like Sapphira is with Billy, Billy's dad and some of the knights along with Shiloh and her dad and also Gabriel getting ready to go to another demension. Then Elam was just swooped up by Angel's dragon just before getting killed by a muskrat. Then Bonnie and her mom where on vacation and then Devin the "Dead" slayer sent them a message saying that he was going to kill them. So everyone is in trouble right now especially Abigail because she just fell down an almost endless hole followed by her mother ( a dragon) and Walter and Ashley. So When the others landed with the dragons help they couldn't find Abigail she is suspected to be dead.
I had mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I was disappointed because some of my favourite characters seemed to change in very drastic ways. The book was also kind of slow in parts, and hard to keep going, contrary to the usual fast pace that I tend to use while reading Mr. Davis' other books. However, I really enjoyed the storyline, and I cannot wait to move on to The Bones of Makaidos.
I'm actually starting to really enjoy this series. The writing style is still not my favorite, but I can follow it now and I'm really starting to love all of the characters. They have truly been developed nicely despite their unrealistic mannerisms, it works. The story is starting to pick up and I'm curious as to how it will turn in the last of the series.
Also, I'm really beginning to understand parts of how my friend thought because of this and I've learned through carrying them around that more people read them as children than I thought. I really would have enjoyed these as a kid, had I found them back then.
This is not a stand alone book. If you have not read any other book in this series drop it now and go back and read "Raising Dragons." If you do not read all of the books you will be so very lost.
For those of you who have read the previous books in this series I am sure that your curiosity will make you read this book anyway so instead of ruining anything I will just say that you need to be prepared for more multiple story threads that jump around and intersect in mysterious and confusing ways.
This book perfectly continued the previous one. It was absolutely thrilling, and I was also happy that Billy came back for parts of the book. It was incredibly neat, and all of my favorite characters continued to mature and become more amazing than ever. I also appreciate all the themes that Bryan Davis uses in his book. It's amazing how life-applicable a fiction book can be. This book also gave a perfect openings into the next, The Bones of Makaidos which by the way, is also an incredible book. Oracles of Fire is such a good series!
Awesome book!!!!!!!!
This book really inspires the Christian faith and the young adults who read it. The language is beautiful, the characters believable. The plot is well thought out and the troubles seem real while there is the longing to be with someone else, a bit of romance, and the joys of good friends and brave warriors at your side. All in all, Bryan Davis has done a great job with the third book of his adventurous and lovable series.
This book was a good sequel to the first two Oracles of Fire books. My only problem with it was that I couldn't remember who half the characters were and it didn't really accomplish much for the plot. It just kind of went on and on and on.
