Why Wall Charts?

Having competent teachers is important. But a competent teacher with quality textbooks but no teaching aid (wall charts) is like a carpenter with a good tack hammer but no nails.

Wall charts are large graphics or posters designed for display on a wall as a teaching aid or source of information. Put differently, a wall chart is a type of large poster often displaying information for educational use. Wall charts’ existence dates back to the 1840s.

If a school has competent teachers and quality textbooks both for teachers and pupils, one may be tempted to ask: why wall chart again?

Educational wall charts serve numerous functions: they are used to illustrate concepts or things, demonstrate processes, differentiate between similar things, capture interest and stimulate emotion, etc.

Having competent teachers is important. But a competent teacher with quality textbooks but no teaching aid (wall charts) is like a carpenter with a good tack hammer but no nails.

Wall charts drive in the message well with their visual illustrations. For instance, a research has shown that visual aids “…help the teacher to clarify, establish, and correlate and co-ordinate precise conceptions, understandings and appreciations and support him to make learning more actual, active, motivating, encouraging, significant and glowing.” (Ghulam Shabiralyani et al, 2015)

Wall charts motivate and inspire students to learn, effectively illustrate a concept, provide reproducible for students’ use, provide directions for hands-on activities, provide suggestions for additional instructional activities, and so on.
