TheCaptain visited on 12th Oct 2019 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Driving towards Evora from Pavia, and after the town of Arraiolos, we see a large brown sign stating something like Recinto do megalithica, which I think is directions to a local megalithic cromlech. However, we see no further signs in the locality, and realise that perhaps the sign is for a megalithic tour drive. We find no other megalithic sites in the vicinity (this was before I figured out how this all works), and it ends up taking us out of the way to Almendres. However, the late afternoon light is fantastic, we still have an hour or so to spare, the others are fairly keen that we should go see it, and it would help me with my tomorrows megalithic tour route if we did visit this now. After the village of Guadelupe there is an interpretation centre and shop, then it is several miles of dirt road, before a parking place and fenced footpath up to the beautifully shaped menhir, which is about 4 metres tall. It has a carving of a "crook" near to the top, and is apparently a marker for summer solstice sunrise from the cromlech. Pity about the grain silos.

Menir dos Almendres
Menir dos Almendres submitted by DrewParsons : In this photo it is possible to see some of the art work towards the top of the menhir. April 2010. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Menir dos Almendres is a phallic shaped menhir of about 4m high with a "crook" insulation around the top. This menhir is believed to be part of a larger group known as Cromeleque dos Almendres. Although it's situated a little bit far off the Almendres stone circle (at about 1.3Km Northeast) its location has revealed a strategic placement, if you see it from the Almendres enclosure it coincides with the sunrise on the summer solstice (the greatest day of the year).

See also Cromeleque dos Almendres, one of the most ancient and important megalithic stone circles in the world. This monument is classified as IIP - Imóvel de Interesse Público (Estate of Public Interest) since December, 21st of 1974.

About the access
The location is very easy to find, once you get out of Évora by the national road 114 there are signposts pointing your way to the Almendres location. You must get to Guadalupe and there are signs pointing your way everywhere. Once you get to Cromeleque street you follow it until you reach the dirt road that gives you access to the Almendres site. When you get to the Imani Country House Hotel junction follow the left road. In all you will drive about 1.8Km in this dirt road and then you reach the site. There's a place where you can park your car. From here there's no choice but do the 300m walk to get to the menhir.

Aditional information:
- You are entering in private property but the access is possible.
- The entrance to the zone of the monuments may be blocked by fences that were essentially made to demarcate the land and not allow the escape of livestock. Usually there are spaces in the fences within these demarcated areas where the access is possible. When entering in demarcated land never forget to close the access gate of the location, you need to be very aware with this rule because cattle can escape.
- There are no signs prohibiting us from entering so the access can be open but be careful when you explore every time you see this red plaques that alert you for the Hunting Zones. Remind yourself that usually hunters can only hunt at selected hunting days (Thursdays, Sundays and on public holidays).
- If you see someone always ask permission to see the site.
- Always be sympathetic towards the locals.

Very easy to find, but not so easy to walk on the heavily degraded path - hiking boots are advisable. The menhir does not stand freely but is surrounded by thick vegetation. You can't go wrong, on either site of the way is a fence. I think its not possible to walk from here directly to the Los Almendres site.

I agree with the coordinates given by FilipeCSilva and have adjusted those given on the site page above. I used a hand held GPS at the site in April 2010 to establish the coordinates.
