Stratton Sclavos, the former VeriSign CEO and current co-owner of the San Jose Sharks, on Wednesday announced he’s investing $1 million in a mobile security startup based in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Sclavos will join the board of Duo Security board as part of the deal, which he’s making through Radar Partners, the boutique investment firm in Palo Alto he runs with fellow Sharks owner Kevin Compton.

“Stratton has been integral in building the security infrastructure of the modern web, and he understands this industry like no one else,” said Duo Security co-founder Dug Song in a statement.

Sclavos spent a dozen years as CEO of VeriSign, a provider of secure e-commerce services, before stepping down in 2007.

In a statement, he said Duo Security’s technology would make it easier for big businesses to let their employees move sensitive data online without sacrificing security.

The startup’s customers, who include Tumblr and Twitter, use Duo’s authentication service to access their password-protected accounts via mobile phone. Duo’s X-Ray mobile app also lets users of Android devices scan their phones for potential security issues.

Founded in early 2010, Duo Security counts Google (GOOG) and Palo Alto’s True Ventures among its other investors.
