Is Jesse Spencer Returning for the 'Chicago Fire' Season Finale?

Chicago Fire Season 10 is blazing toward its season finale, which is coming to NBC in late May. With only a handful of episodes of the season left, #OneChicago fans' sights are set on how things are going to come to an end.

Fans are expecting the finale to be the wedding of Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo). But what viewers are really hoping is that Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) will be among the guests at these nuptials.

In a recent interview, series showrunner Derek Haas spoke about the chances of Casey returning – and whether Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) would be with him.

Is Jesse Spencer Coming Back to Chicago Fire?

According to that interview, the show is doing its utmost to get Casey back for the season finale – but there is not that much time left for everything to be arranged.

In a TVLine interview, Haas said: "That would be a coup for our show if we could talk Jesse into coming back...Status on that is all systems looking good. And yes, I talked to him last week so I'm very hopeful that that's going happen."

He later added: "It is our great expectation that we will see both Casey and Brett in the finale, because giant, big exciting things are going to be happening. This will be the best finale ever, I'll go ahead and say it."

Previously, Haas told Variety he "would be mortified if there was a wedding that didn't include Casey."

The day after the TVLine interview was published, NBC released a list of season finale dates for its shows. This revealed that the Chicago Fire Season 10 finale was set for Wednesday, May 25 – seven weeks from now. As network shows are usually filmed about six to seven weeks in advance, the series finale is very close to being filmed. As such, if Spencer and Killmer are coming back, fans should be spotting them on set very soon.

Spencer left the show in October 2021, saying he wanted to take a break from the demands of network TV after 18 consecutive years working first on House and then on Chicago Fire. At that time, he told reporters: "There is the potential for me to come back. I still am in Chicago right now. I'm not running off to Los Angeles or anything...so I'm still going to be here, but I'm just stepping back for right now."

Killmer, meanwhile, has been missing from the show for the last few weeks while her character visits Casey in Portland. Potentially, this could be the way the show is setting up Casey's return, by having the pair of them come back to celebrate the wedding.

Speaking of this wedding to TV Insider, Haas said: "We're headed towards a finale that is going to be very memorable. The Kidd-Severide build-up has been a long time coming and the event, we're Chicago Fire, so if you think it's going to be one thing, it might not exactly happen the way all the characters have it in mind to happen."

Chicago Fire Season 10 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. Previous episodes are streaming now on Peacock.
