Gymnast Nadia Comaneci on Getting a Perfect 10 at 14 Years Old

Season 6 Episode 616
CC | tv-14
The history of the Olympics is full of seemingly impossible feats. Romanian-American athlete Nadia Comaneci, for example, was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10. She was only 14 years old.

Today, she looks back in wonder. "To believe that a 14-year-old did such a thing," Nadia says during her recent Oprah: Where Are They Now? interview. "I thought that this is what I want to do, and this is normal, but as the time goes by, I think that I appreciate that a lot more because I know what it takes and how many years you need to work to be there for 35 seconds on some particular events."

The decades that have passed have only made her more appreciative of her triumph. "I appreciate more and more what happened 40 years ago."

Tune in Sunday, July 24, at 10/9c for the Oprah: Where Are They Now? special Olympic Legends.
