Audience Member The power of this documentary on the acclaimed photographer Garry Winogrand is in the incredibly striking and remarkable photos that are presented here. Known as a "street photographer", Winogrand passed away in 1984 at the age of 56. He left thousands of rolls of undeveloped film, and posthumously there have been a number of exhibitions displaying his work. The film, directed by Sasha Waters Freyer, follows pretty much the standard doc form with some personal history of Winogrand, archival clips, and interviews with his contemporaries, family, and friends. But those amazing photos captured by Winogard's most talented eye left me wanting to know the backstory on nearly every one of them. To note: no subtitles available except when Winogrand was giving a lecture or being interviewed, but I was able to use the closed caption option on my remote to obtain them. Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader [Garry Winogrand] seems very much alive in Sasha Waters Freyer's richly detailed documentary. Mar 24, 2020 Full Review Matthew Lickona San Diego Reader The whole thing plays like a well curated museum exhibit - a retrospective to counter and/or complete the one held shortly after his death in 1984. The material is worth seeing, but doesn't really demand a big screen. Rated: 2/5 Nov 30, 2018 Full Review G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle He never gave up, never stopped shooting. It was a well-lived life because he apparently discovered that it mattered after all. Rated: 3/4 Oct 29, 2018 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site Winogrand ... produced hundreds of thousands of photographs with his 35mm Leica, creating a chronicle of life in America from the late 1950s to the early 1980s. Feb 21, 2021 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills Sasha Waters Freyer's documentary provides a vivid appreciation of this long-gone but still vivid talent... Oct 21, 2020 Full Review Seph Rodney Hyperallergic All Things are Photographable reminds me of what brash, unselfconscious documentation of the dramatic, teeming nature that our interactions can be.
