4. Biological warfare also known as germ warfare is the use of biological
toxin or infectious agents such as bacteria , viruses and fungi with an
intent to kill humans, animals orplants.
Bio-terrorism
Intentional or threatened use of biological agents to cause fear in or
actually inflict death or disease upon a large population for political,
religious, or ideological reasons.

high morbidity and
mortality
E.g. Anthrax (Bacillus
anthracis), Plague
(Yersinia pestis), Smallpox
(Variola major)
E.g. Brucellosis (Brucella
spp.), Q fever (Coxiella
burnetii)
E.g. Hantavirus, SARS
coronavirus, Nipah
9. ❖ Multiple Methods For Delivery
❖ Good Logistics - cheap to make and store
❖ Versatile - can be in small or large quantities
❖ Easy To Conceal
❖ Extremely toxic
❖ Defence may be difficult
10. ❖ Difficulty of protecting the workers at all stages of production, transportation,
loading of delivery systems and final delivery
❖ Difficulty in maintaining quality control and sufficient containment during
growth and harvesting of agents
❖ Effective delivery problems
❖ Poor storage survival
❖ Difficult to control once released
11. ▪ A letter containing anthrax was received by Tom
Daschle, the leader of the United States Senate.
▪ 23 members of his staff and 5 police officers tested
positive with nasal swabs.
▪ This is the letter that was sent to NBC anchor Tom
Brokaw with cutaneous anthrax and that infected
Brokaw’s assistant, Erin O'Connor.
▪ The envelope is postmarked September 18 from Trenton,
N.J. The handwriting is identical to the one sent to the
New York Post below postmarked on the same date and
sent from the same place.
12. ❖ Effective medical system
❖ Growing threat of bio warfare agents has led to the development of specific field
tools that perform on-the-spot analysis and identification: Sandwich
immunoassay, Bio Pen
❖ Mostly biological weapons are delivered as aerosols, so most effective defense will
be a good protective mask equipped with filters capable of blocking bacteria,
virusesand spores
❖ WHO’s Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN): Works for
both biological warfare agents as well as other communicable diseases
