 Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, commonly known as striped (sutchi,
iridescent shark) catfish, fetches high price is markets.
 Culture of this species is growing day-by-day in Bangladesh, Indonesia,
India and Vietnam, the latter being top producer and exporter of the
species in more than 100 countries, mainly in European Union, Russia,
South-east Asia and USA in the form of white fillets.
 In India, it was brought in West Bengal through Bangladesh during 1997.
Initially, its culture was carried out in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal in
private sector but the Government of India permitted aquaculture of P.
hypophthalmus in year 2010-11. P. hypophthalmus, the fast-growing exotic
catfish, has vast potential for freshwater aquaculture in India.
Identifying characters:
 Fins dark grey or black; branched dorsal-fin rays; gill rakers normally
developed; young with a black stripe along lateral line and a second long
black stripe below lateral line, large adults uniformly grey.
 Dark stripe on the middle of anal fin; dark stripe in each caudal lobe; small
gill rakers regularly interspersed with larger ones.
Food and feeding:
 P. hypophthalmus when young they are carnivorous and cannibalistic;
 feeding at the bottom on offal, snail, gastropods, insects, etc and
 turn to omnivorous feeding habit,
 readily accepting artificial feeds under confined culture.
HATCHERY DESIGN:
 The size of hatchery depends on the target production of larvae, fry and
fingerling. Hatcheries are generally designed with four main components:
broodstock tanks, hatching jars (Zoug jar and Weiss shaped incubators),
larval handling tanks and broodstock ponds (including potential and
conditioning ponds). The hatching jars have a volume of 6–200 L (average
40 L).
BROODSTOCK:
 Broodstock ponds are carefully treated before use,
usually by drying, sludge removal, liming (quick
lime) and salting (common salt).
 Broods are stocked at 4–5 t/ha. Males and females
can be maintained at the ratio of three to four
females to six to seven males, either separately or
together.
 Broodstock selected for induced spawning must
weigh at least 1.75 kg for females and 1.5 kg for
males.
 The overall feeding rates for broodstock range
from 0.2–10 % body weight/day (average 2.8 %)
and 0.2–25 % body weight/day (average 5.4 %) for
manufactured pelleted feed and farm-made feeds,
respectively.
Selection of broodfish for injection
 The species reaches sexual maturity by 3 years of age and can grow up to
a size of 4-6 kg.
 The fish spawns throughout the year, but the peak breeding period is in
May–July
 Good quality broodstock:
(Females should have a big belly, thin abdominal skin, swollen, reddish
genitals, should have an oocyte diameter of 1.0–1.1 mm which can be
monitored using catheter and the males should discharge milt on
application of gentle pressure on the abdomen).
INDUCED BREEDING:
Femalesreceive 2-4 hormone injections, while males are injected only once
at the time of resolving dose to the female.
Broodstock are spawned in single pairs or in larger numbers and are usually
dry stripped.
Fecundity- 100000 eggs/kg spawner.
Continued...
 The eggs are incubated in conical jars made either of stainless steel or
glass, with up-welling water flow to keep the eggs in suspension.
 The eggs hatch within 22-24 hours.
 Yolk-sac absorption takes takes 24 hours.
 The larvae are transferred from the hatchery just prior to the complete yolk-
sac absorption.

Pangassius hypophthalmus.

  • 1. Prepared by: Miss. Sadiya Farooq. SKUAST-KASHMIR.
  • 2.  Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, commonly known as striped (sutchi, iridescent shark) catfish, fetches high price is markets.  Culture of this species is growing day-by-day in Bangladesh, Indonesia, India and Vietnam, the latter being top producer and exporter of the species in more than 100 countries, mainly in European Union, Russia, South-east Asia and USA in the form of white fillets.  In India, it was brought in West Bengal through Bangladesh during 1997. Initially, its culture was carried out in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal in private sector but the Government of India permitted aquaculture of P. hypophthalmus in year 2010-11. P. hypophthalmus, the fast-growing exotic catfish, has vast potential for freshwater aquaculture in India.
  • 3. Identifying characters:  Fins dark grey or black; branched dorsal-fin rays; gill rakers normally developed; young with a black stripe along lateral line and a second long black stripe below lateral line, large adults uniformly grey.  Dark stripe on the middle of anal fin; dark stripe in each caudal lobe; small gill rakers regularly interspersed with larger ones.
  • 4. Food and feeding:  P. hypophthalmus when young they are carnivorous and cannibalistic;  feeding at the bottom on offal, snail, gastropods, insects, etc and  turn to omnivorous feeding habit,  readily accepting artificial feeds under confined culture.
  • 5. HATCHERY DESIGN:  The size of hatchery depends on the target production of larvae, fry and fingerling. Hatcheries are generally designed with four main components: broodstock tanks, hatching jars (Zoug jar and Weiss shaped incubators), larval handling tanks and broodstock ponds (including potential and conditioning ponds). The hatching jars have a volume of 6–200 L (average 40 L).
  • 6. BROODSTOCK:  Broodstock ponds are carefully treated before use, usually by drying, sludge removal, liming (quick lime) and salting (common salt).  Broods are stocked at 4–5 t/ha. Males and females can be maintained at the ratio of three to four females to six to seven males, either separately or together.  Broodstock selected for induced spawning must weigh at least 1.75 kg for females and 1.5 kg for males.  The overall feeding rates for broodstock range from 0.2–10 % body weight/day (average 2.8 %) and 0.2–25 % body weight/day (average 5.4 %) for manufactured pelleted feed and farm-made feeds, respectively.
  • 7. Selection of broodfish for injection  The species reaches sexual maturity by 3 years of age and can grow up to a size of 4-6 kg.  The fish spawns throughout the year, but the peak breeding period is in May–July  Good quality broodstock: (Females should have a big belly, thin abdominal skin, swollen, reddish genitals, should have an oocyte diameter of 1.0–1.1 mm which can be monitored using catheter and the males should discharge milt on application of gentle pressure on the abdomen).
