There is an Eclipse Coming: A Look at the World’s Largest Yacht

The world’s largest yacht is an impressive sight as it glides majestically through the waters of the world. Bearing the name Eclipse, the new super-yacht emerged from a shipyard in Hamburg in 2010 as the new plaything of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Measuring a massive 533 feet in length, Eclipse easily took the title of world’s largest yacht from its previous holder, Dubai, which is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum. Eclipse now forms part of Abramovich’s fleet of luxury yachts, whose other members are named Luna, Sussurro, Titan, and Umbra. Facilities on board Eclipse are not only roomier than on most vessels but also extremely luxurious. The yacht features two swimming pools, several hot tubs, and guest cabins kitted out with home cinema screens. As for Abramovich’s master cabin, the ceiling can be opened up on clear nights to give the Russian billionaire a spectacular view of the night sky.

Roman Abramovich made his fortune by investing in oil during the early 1990s. Today, he owns the private investment company Millhouse LLC, as well as the popular UK soccer team Chelsea Football Club, and his wealth has been estimated at a cool $12 billion dollars.

With such extreme personal wealth, Abramovich could easily afford to splash out on his new super-yacht, even though it came with a hefty price tag. Estimates of the cost of Eclipse range from $250-$800 million. Abramovich also employs a staff of approximately 70 crew members to keep life on board ship running smoothly.

One would expect a person of Roman Abramovich’s wealth and status to be concerned about security, but his safety on board Eclipse is secured. As well as a sophisticated system designed to detect unwelcome intruders, the yacht also incorporates bullet-proof windows, armour plating and an anti-paparazzi laser shield to protect those on board from outside interference. There is even a military-style defence system that guards against missile attacks.

Abramovich is able to reach his yacht in style using either of the two helipads featured on board. Once safely landed on his floating palace, it is clear that he wishes to relax in style and privacy, far from the eyes of the media. It seems that Eclipse is more than just a rich man’s toy; it is the perfect place to get away from it all.
