The little-known Spanish seaside resort that’s soared in popularity with Brits – thanks to cheap hotels & flights

HOLIDAYMAKERS are having to be a bit more resourceful with their choices of destination this year, as costs soar for flights and hotels.

This has led to less well-known resorts becoming increasingly popular, with bargains to be found away from the more commonly visited places.

One Spanish seaside resort benefiting from this is Murcia, which has seen a 1795 per cent rise in the number of people searching for holidays there since 2019, according to Skyscanner.

This is due to the fact that there are cheap flights, with new routes launched this year.

EasyJet added new flights to the region's Corvera airport from both Manchester and London Luton, which travel experts at Skyscanner say has definitely helped.

Additionally, there are return flights to Murcia from the UK in August from £100 return, making it relatively affordable compared to other destinations at that time of year.

That's not to say it's not as worthwhile a destination to visit either, with plenty for visitors of all kinds to enjoy in both the city and its surrounding areas.

TripAdvisor describes it as "laid-back" with "plenty of landmarks to linger over" as well as "Mediterranean valleys, mountains, and coastlines" that "beckon from further afield".

There are also several annual festivals that "bring a buzz" to the entire region.

There are 11 beaches in the region that have an overall rating of 4.5/5 on the review site, with Playa de Calblanque the pick of the bunch.

One review described it as "the perfect beach" saying it is "unspoilt, with a beautiful clean sea.

"The flora is amazing. Best beach in Spain easily."

Murcia also impresses visitors with its range of food on offer.

Its coastal location means it has plenty of seafood for guests to sample, while tapas and other Mediterranean options are also available in abundance.

The Santa Maria cathedral is among the top picks to visit in the city centre, with its Plaza Cardenal Belluga also popular.

Meanwhile, the Christ of Monteagudo - a colossal statue of Jesus located on top of the Castle of Monteagudo - is another must for holidaymakers to the area.

Elsewhere, the city of Cartagena is also in the Murcia region and is home to some impressive Roman ruins, including a theatre and a forum.

Staying in Murcia is affordable too, with some accommodation available from £35 per night, for two on hotel booking websites.

Meanwhile, a five bedroom house with sea view in Rambla Boltada can be found from as little as £26pp per night.

Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s Trends and Destination Expert explained that being versatile could lead to cheaper breaks this year.

She said: “There are great deals for those who know how to shop around - and remaining flexible on times and destinations will ultimately bag travellers the best prices.
