Poble Espanyol in Barcelona

The city of Barcelona offers its visitors a journey through history, art and passion, and among its countless treasures stands the Pueblo Español, a picturesque village nestled pastorally on the captivating Montjuic hill. The Pueblo Español offers a whirlwind journey through the architectural and cultural splendor of Spain, all without leaving the city. So let's go discover the mesmerizing mosaic in the most Spanish experience possible.

The story of the Pueblo Español

The Poble Espanyol, which translates to 'Spanish Village', is an open architecture museum located on Montjuic hill in the heart of Barcelona.

The establishment of the museum begins in 1929, when the city of Barcelona hosted the World's Fair, and the purpose of the exhibition was to present the city of Barcelona as a center for technology, art and industry. Leading architects in the country were recruited for the ambitious project, who worked in collaboration with famous artists, with the aim of creating a small village that would present the essence of Spanish architecture, by presenting reproductions of buildings from different regions of the country. The architects and artists went on a comprehensive tour around Spain where they chose the most iconic and impressive buildings, which they duplicated in the picturesque village.

The result of the hard work is a beautiful village that includes 117 buildings, streets and squares, a perfect copy of construction typical of regions in Spain - from Andalusia through the Basque Country, Aragon, Castile and many more. The picturesque village has become a microcosm of Spain, in the heart of the city of Barcelona.

The Puebla Español was originally intended to be a temporary exhibit for the six months of the World's Fair, but its charm and appeal has resulted in its preservation to this day. Locals and visitors were so enamored with this authentic representation of Spanish heritage that the decision was made to keep it intact beyond the days of the exhibition.

During its many decades of existence, the Puebla Español has become an architectural showcase and a vibrant cultural center where you can find artists in workshops engaged in traditional crafts such as glassblowing, pottery and jewelry making. The venue also hosts cultural events, concerts and festivals, ensuring that the village remains a vibrant and interactive space.

The village is not only a trip through the architectural diversity of Spain but also a journey to its rich cultural and artistic heritage. The winding streets, squares and buildings tell stories of distant and lesser-known areas of the country, making Puebla Espanyol a must-visit for anyone who wants to experience the heart and soul of Spain right in the heart of the city of Barcelona.
