S. Bartolomeu do Mar Menir (Mar)

This menhir is over two metres high, and presents engravings that may suggest a quite early anthropomorphic figure. The menhirs were megalithic monuments related to fertility cults. Dated to the late Neolithic up to the Bronze Age (III-II millennium BC).

From the same period we have also other megalithic monuments - tumulus or dolmens. The dolmens or portal tombs were the deposition site of the dead. All this monuments are historic brands of the Megalithic culture.

What is interesting is that, the popular tradition of the region also stated that the menhir, couldn’t be removed from the site where it was-it was there to protect the Land, and if it were to be removed, the sea would invade the now fertile crop fields, sterilising them.
