This hardcover version includes 36 figures and charts showing the details of the project including construction, maps, recovery vehicle, submersible, and target location.

In March of 1968 a Soviet submarine was lost with all hands 16,500 feet below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. In 1974 portions of the submarine were brought to the surface using a covert recovery system designed specifically for the mission. The story of the more than six years intervening is the story of Project AZORIAN, that is, the story of the MV Hughes Glomar Explorer.

This endeavor ranks at the forefront of imaginative and bold operations. It combines immense size and scope, advancements with technology, complex engineering and testing, and a demanding mission scenario in an unforgiving marine environment.

While some aspects of the CIA mission remain Top Secret, recently declassified documents allow this story to be told from its early beginnings with the loss of the submarine, until the final days when the recovery ship sailed on her last voyage. It also includes the development, planning, security, engineering, and execution of the program, with the thoughts and ideas surrounding it.

Truly amazing technological achievement! It really helps to watch the movie to visualize what’s in the book.
I lived very near Long Beach harbor and flew over the HGE several times out of Torrance airport.

Not much detail about the actual recovery operation, but rather a fascinating look at the behind the scenes logistical operations involved in a magnificent engineering achievement.

It also has some interesting comments from the Russian point of view on the operation.

Good read 👍

Author did a nice job of summarizing the massive, clandestine effort of raising a sunken Russian sub from the depths of the pacific. He didn’t try and incorporate any human interest narrative - just the facts as he discovered them in recently declassified material. Would have been nice if there had been diagrams, sketches or photos. Intriguing to think about what CIA found that we don’t know about.

Good read, would make for an interesting movie, Clive Cuddler would be proud he writes exceptionally good books as well.

An interesting read on the Hughes Gomar Explorer that covers the building and operation of the famed CIA ship used to recover the K-123 during the Nixon/Ford administrations.
The book does cover some of the recovery but focuses on the ship, not the CIA cover story.

I have read several books on this topic, this is first book that attempts to present Soviet perspective.
Agree or not this was very interesting. I suspect we will never know full story!

I have read probably every book on this subject, this book give the facts and only the facts, no in between filler personal or useless information. The author stuck with the subject and the facts that pertain with the subject. Highly recommend.

The story of building a ship and equipment to pluck a Russian sub from the ocean floor could have been epic.... this wasn't. Alot of time was spent discussing how the Program was organized, where the funding came from, and how "great" the security personnel were. Alot of pages were dedicated to the schedule. No picture details, no inside Engineering artifacts. We don't get to know much about the players, or the actual event details about attaching and pulling up the sub as well as what happened. It was more like a synthesized status report from public files. I really learned more about the effort from a Wikipedia article.......
