" Subtle, orchestral songs by an inspired Swiss band "

Whenever you’re heartbroken or understandably worried about world news, being surrounded by friends and relatives can help, and bring some much-needed comfort. Black Sea Dahu is the perfect example: to form this seven-piece band, singer and songwriter Janine Cathrein brought together her brother and sister, both musicians, along with some of their friends. This sense of family and the power of the collective can be perceived in their songs, where the atmosphere alternates between warm sunlight and melancholy shadows, providing a calming sensation.

Based in Zürich, Switzerland, Black Sea Dahu were formerly known as Josh. They announced they had decided to change their name in 2018 in a Facebook post, adding “Don’t worry: we’re still the same”. That year, they unveiled their debut album, ‘White Creatures’. In February 2022, they released their second album, ‘I Am My Mother’, a wonderful collection of seven songs which were mainly written on tour in the past few years and recorded in a Bienne studio. All of them are meticulously orchestrated but never over-the-top. In total synchronization, the seven musicians use their skills with grace and subtlety, like some other artists in their extended musical family: Other Lives, Patrick Watson, or Joan as Police Woman to name but a few. The Swiss collective are also influenced by the folk scene from the 1960s, modern indie-rock and orchestral pop. Black Sea Dahu are currently planning a long tour in 2022 and recording a new EP, due by the end of the year.
