Review

As I strap on the Dahu Ecorce 01X 120 flex boots, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement. This Swiss-designed boot was released in the North American market just before the Covid-19 pandemic, and this winter season is being treated as a re-introduction of the product now that things are returning to a bit more normal program. Having tested it in the All-Mountain Traditional medium-width category alongside nine other models, I was initially surprised that it wasn't instantly out-classed, and then I was shocked that it comfortably held its own in the middle of the pack. By the end of the ten-day test period, and after many individual tests on the boot, I declared the Dahu brand, and this model in particular, the good surprise of the test. Bravo Dahu!

One of the unique features of the Dahu boot is its entry and exit protocol. While you could unpack the liner from the shell, it's not the easiest way to get into and out of the boot. With the liner loaded into the shell, its rearward-hinging cuff locked into normal skiing position and the forward external tongue released and out of the way, it's ready to suck in some foot. And it does! The long lace system with many eyelets, lots of slack, and a handy lace lock make sliding into the boot easier than any other boot on the market. Getting it off is just as effortless. Release the shell's external tongue, loosen the liner's lace system, and bam, you're outta there. This entry and exit protocol is perfect for skiers who intend to use it like a traditional boot: get to the hill, put on the boot, ski, take off the boot when done, and leave. However, for those who want to deploy its secret apres ski weapon or enable a rapid switch from skiing to driving, the rear portion of the shell can be released as well, and the liner (with foot) can be pulled out easily for some snow-boot-stomp-around fun. Getting the liner (with foot) back into the shell system may take some practice, but it's accomplished, and done most easily while seated.

But how does it ski? Well, let's talk about how it flexes first, as that is the second most important thing about the Dahu boot. The combination of the tallish feeling liner tongue and highly tunable lacing tension enables a well-distributed fit along the shin that oozes comfort but in a snug and firmly cushioned way. Coupled with the characteristically even flex feel of the three-piece shell construction, the fore-aft movements in this boot are natural and comfortable in a way often not felt in more traditional designs. The 120 flex we tested exemplified this positive element, offering a long--but not collapsing--flex feel that remained consistent in both pressure and comfort against the shin throughout its range of flexion. As someone who has suffered from chronic shin bangs in the past, I was pleasantly surprised by the Dahu boot's ability to provide a comfortable and pressure-free fit.

Our test team pointed to the boot's ease of entry and exit as a major selling point, making it convenient for those who want a quick transition from skiing to après-ski activities or even driving. The unique three-piece design with a rearward-hinging cuff and long lace system liner allows for a snug and comfortable fit along the shin, with excellent flex characteristics that offer power and agility without collapsing. The transmission of movement and energy from the inner boot to the shell is direct and accurate, providing a responsive skiing experience.

However, some testers noted that the out-of-the-box geometry of the boot was slightly more upright than the current norm, and the lateral set-up was softer to the inside edge than most traditional boots. Fortunately, the boot comes with an offset bushing that can be swapped onto the rear cuff to adjust the fore-aft stance, which most testers preferred. For lateral adjustments, testers found that adding material to the medial aspect of the shell helped fill the gap between the liner and shell, resolving any discomfort.

When it comes to boot fitting options, testers observed that the Dahu boot is designed to fit well out of the box for the average foot shape, with minimal fitting features outside of minor in-liner tweaks and liner heat moulding. However, it was noted that the boot fits extremely well around typical foot trouble spots, such as the forefoot and medial ankle bone, without requiring additional adjustments. Testers advised potential customers to be satisfied with the boot's fit as it is when considering a purchase, as the Dahu boot is not intended for extensive customization.

One aspect that testers found noteworthy was the length of the external boot sole, which runs slightly longer than traditional boots of the same size. This may require adjustments or re-mounting of bindings for skiers who are switching to Dahu boots while keeping their existing ski and binding setup.

In conclusion, the Dahu Ecorce 01X 120 flex boot is a pleasant surprise in the all-mountain traditional medium-width category. Its unique design, with an easy entry and exit protocol, excellent flex characteristics, and comfortable fit, make it stand out among its competitors. While some adjustments may be needed for fore-aft and lateral stance preferences, the overall performance and comfort of the boot were highly regarded by our test team. Whether you're a seasoned skier or a ski enthusiast looking for a new experience, the Dahu Ecorce 01X 120 flex boot is worth considering for your next winter adventure. Bravo Dahu!
