Architect | Influencer | Champion of good design and qualified labor. My feed contains inspiration and education on tile, stone, masonry, and terrazzo on behalf of BAC craftworkers and contractors.

When it comes to masonry arches, do you know your intrados from your extrados? Whether the spring line will be tangent to the abutment? The required angle of the skewback? You can be sure that union bricklayers are trained for arches and capable of laying out and building all types of arches from Roman to Segmental to the classic Jack Arch. It’s all part of the craft! #Masonry #Brick #Arches #BAC

As an older architect, and one that values traditional design & construction - and uses on the rare opportunity - I'll bet most younger architects have never even seen these terms. Tho' I would be tickled to be proved wrong! But are masons REALLY still trained in these crafts? I really doubt it here (Arkansas).

I'm from Chicago, where the mason's skill and artistry in everyday buildings are everywhere if you look hard enough. Masonry is just as relevant today as it was centuries ago.

Most arch cracks I have seen are in the intrados and extrados areas
