The earthquake has killed at least 62 people and injured dozens, according to local officials. It began around 4:10 p.m. local time on the west coast of central Japan, creating tsunami waves of up to 1.2 meters, or 4 feet.

Wajima was hit especially hard, as tremors toppled high-rises and caused fires in the city center, destroying about 200 buildings, according to the public broadcaster NHK.
