Egremni beach

Egremni is a breathtakingly wild beach situated on the southwesternmost tip of Lefkada, approximately 40 km from the town of Lefkada. It is renowned as one of the most stunning beaches not only on the island but also across the Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, its extensive coastline bestows upon it the title of the longest beach in Lefkada. As a result, visitors can revel in the awe-inspiring landscapes with greater tranquility here, compared to the island's other exquisite yet often overcrowded beaches.

Beach description

Egremni is a paradise for those who value natural charm and privacy. The sense of isolation from the rest of the world is due to the massive cliffs that surround this beach, making it difficult to access. However, the spectacular scenery is worth the effort.

  • The white limestone cliffs that emerge from the emerald embrace of the dense vegetation covering the majestic 150-meter-high cliffs create a striking contrast against the turquoise sea waters. This impressive landscape makes Egremni one of the top three beach destinations in Lefkada, alongside Porto Katsiki and Kathisma.
  • The waves here are constant: until noon, they are not very strong, but in the afternoon, they become the most powerful, noisy, and foamy, often reaching up to 3 meters in height. These conditions are perfect for honing your surfboard skills.
  • Egremni is renowned for its exceptionally clean water, rich in turquoise hues. The depth increases suddenly, just a short distance from the shore. In the southern part of the beach, the sea is so deep that cruise ships can anchor even off the coast.

The expansive 2.5-kilometer-long shore is covered with very pure light sand interspersed with small stones and pebbles, which also cover the seabed. With such length and varying width from 20 to 50 meters, it is almost never crowded here. Even when sightseeing boats bring tourists, everyone can find a spot for privacy on the shore. The outskirts of the beach are usually less crowded, while the center is a popular spot for nudists.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Lefkada for a beach vacation is during the summer months, specifically from June to September. During this period, the weather is ideal for beach activities, with long sunny days and minimal rainfall.

  • June: The beginning of the summer offers pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making it a perfect time for those seeking a more peaceful beach experience.
  • July and August: These are the peak months for tourism in Lefkada. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, crystal-clear waters, and lively beach bars. However, it's also when the island is most crowded, so booking accommodations in advance is highly recommended.
  • September: As the summer winds down, September provides a balance with warm sea temperatures and fewer tourists. This month is ideal for visitors looking to enjoy the beauty of Lefkada's beaches without the peak season hustle.

Regardless of the month you choose, Lefkada's stunning beaches, such as Porto Katsiki and Egremni, offer a breathtaking backdrop for a memorable beach vacation. Just remember to consider your preferences for weather, crowd levels, and local events when planning your trip.

Infrastructure

There is almost no infrastructure on the coast of Egremni beach. In summer, there is a kiosk that sells snacks and food, and you can rent umbrellas and sun loungers. But it is better to take some supplies (at least water) with you.

  • If you want to go surfing here or other options for water leisure, you will have to take all the necessary equipment with you - its rental is not provided here.
  • There are no rescuers on duty here, so you will have to take care of safety yourself. If you have children, it is better to go to a more comfortable beach where there are no strong waves.
  • There are no toilets on the coast, and wild camping is not uncommon here.

It is best to stay in the nearest village of Athani, where it is possible to rent an apartment or villa. For example, you can choose Okeanos Luxury Villas . This hotel is 700 m away from the beach or Aloni Studios & Apartments which is 3 km away from Egremni.

Useful information

  1. The road to the beach begins a few kilometers south of the village of Athani. At the beginning, the path is paved, and then replaced by a dirt one. Having left the car in the parking lot, you will have to overcome about 340 steps down to the beach by a vertical staircase. You should take care of comfortable shoes for the descent.
  2. To avoid traffic jams on a narrow road, it is better to go to the beach in the early morning hours. But it is better to get to Egremni by boat from Vasiliki or Nydri. This will save you from the complexity of the descent-ascent, which is also not considered safe after the earthquake of 2015.
  3. You should take into account that in strong winds access by sea is prohibited. Also, not all sea excursions include a stop on the Egremni beach, only allowing tourists to admire it from the sea before visiting other beaches of the island. The main disadvantage of the boat trip is the numerous crowds of vacationers.
  4. For walking along the beach and entering the water, rubber slippers will not be superfluous, so as not to get hurt on sharp pebbles and not to feel discomfort when walking on pebbles.
  5. You should not stay near the cliffs or visit this picturesque beach after prolonged rains - there is a high probability of rockfalls and landslides. You also should not camp near the sea, because sudden strong waves can easily wash things off the beach.
