CretAquarium is located in Gouves, just a few kilometers from Heraklion Town and the beach of Kokkini Hani. It is the largest aquarium in the Mediterranean and it was founded in 2005 by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research.

The Cretan Sea has always been known for the diversity of its marine life and its beautiful rock formations. CretAquarium presents marine life in impressive reproductions of the Mediterranean natural landscapes, offering visitors a chance to see rare sea creatures. It boasts 61 fish tanks that house over 2,000 creatures of 200 Mediterranean and tropical species.

CretAquarium aims to offer visitors a fascinating and fun way to learn about Mediterranean marine life using modern methods that are adjusted to people of all ages. It has large halls equipped with the latest audio-visual systems for exhibitions, speeches, and conferences. Documentaries about the marine ecosystem are also screened throughout the day.

The aquarium is open daily throughout the year.
