Built as the "Hughes Glomar Explorer" at Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Chester, PA, in 1972-4 as Sun Hull 661. She featured not only a giant heavy-lift gimbal platform but one of the first computer-controlled dynamic deep-water positioning systems, with 3 bow thrusters and 2 transverse thrusters positioned in the skeg below the engine space.
